This is an issue that makes Wales different – the challenge of having over a third of the building stock traditionally built compared to only just over a fifth in England – a bigger challenge for Wales. Along with the rest of the UK, Wales is currently failing to address this challenge which has economic consequences for these assets as well as heritage and building occupant health consequences – Wales and the UK needs to do better!
By improving our knowledge of these buildings constructed with solid masonry walls, before 1919, we will be able to properly and safely improve them. Ensuring that Architects, surveyors, contractors and small builders understand that the traditional housing stock cannot treated the same way as their modern counterparts as this can often have severe unintended consequences, affecting both the occupiers and reputation.
