Yangon Echoes in Edinburgh

4 July 2016
Edinburgh

This event brings together the authors of the book, Yangon Echoes with writers and specialists in our urban history in order to consider the influence that our intangible culture has on our urban realm.

The evening will be in 2 parts;

1. A short  (20 min) talk by the Authors of Yangon Echoes, Virginia Henderson, and Tim Webster.

This book welcomes readers behind the façades of heritage buildings to offer intimate views on life in the cosmopolitan city formerly known as Rangoon, Burma. An unprecedented work of oral history, Yangon Echoes is a rich anthology of fascinating life stories exploring notions and values of heritage and home. This popular history of buildings charts social space and urban folklore, linking past to present via living memories.

The storytellers speak of joy and tragedy, simple pleasures and aching issues, candidly sharing their thoughts and feelings of living through Yangon’s emergence from decades of stagnation to engagement with a rapidly spinning world. Told with courage and charm, these informal stories record everyday life through domestic connections to old places.

2. This will be followed by a 40 min panel debate with the authors, alongside other specialists with a focus on cultural identity and urban heritage from Scotland, as well as further afield. This will include audience participation, and will allow us to consider the processes involved in understanding our urban history through the people that live within our cities, to discuss how, and why this is of such significance to a better understanding of our urban realm.

Following the event, there will be a wine and nibbles networking reception, where there will be a chance to obtain a signed copy of the book.
