English Heritage, in conjunction with the East Anglia Branch of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation and the Conservation of Traditional Thatch Group, is holding a one-day seminar on the conservation of traditional thatch.
The presentations will cover the archaeological and documentary evidence contributing to our understanding of historic thatch and thatching in England, the contribution that historic thatch makes to the significance of historic buildings, the factors contributing to the deterioration of thatch, repair of traditional thatch, and the effect of the introduction of new methods and materials on the authenticity of historic thatched buildings.
Part of the day will be devoted to the issues relating to applications for listed building consent for re-thatching of listed buildings. There will also be an update on the current English Heritage research into the causes of fires in thatched buildings.
