About the venue:
In brief the venue is Grade II listed Pattern Church https://www.patternchurch.org/ is housed in the former Pattern store and water tank for the GWR works, originally constructed in 1897 its special interest is summarised * A rare survival of a purpose-built pattern store, constructed by and for the Great Western Railway works in 1897 * Its massive cast iron water tank, which surmounts the entire area of the building, remains in situ * The building has survived without later extension or major alterations, and retains its original layout and fireproof stairwell * Group value with the adjacent Grade II listed engine turntable (qv), and the other listed buildings of the former GWR works to the east of Rodbourne Road
The building is within Swindon’s Railway Conservation Area, which encompasses the highly significant former Great Western Railway (GWR) works, Swindon Railway Station, and the internationally important railway village.
The area has been the focus of the Swindon Heritage Action Zone (HAZ), with projects relating to specific buildings and the areas streets and spaces.
Details of both can be found online here: Swindon railway conservation area appraisal and management plan | Swindon Borough Council, The Swindon Heritage Action Zone | Swindon Borough Council and Swindon Heritage Action Zone | Historic England The latter includes a link to an online map to tour some of Swindon’s Railway Heritage. In the area is also STEAM – the museum of the GWR STEAM – Museum of the Great Western Railway STEAM – Museum of the Great Western Railway and the designer outlet, contained within many the historic works buildings.
