C20 – Berlin and Bauhaus Tour 2025
The four-day tour led by Alan Powers includes a full day in Dessau, home of the Bauhaus from 1925 to 1932, where there are many immaculately restored original buildings, and a museum opened in 2019 for the centenary of the famous school. In Berlin, we put the Bauhaus in context, looking at work by precursors and contemporaries, including former staff and pupils.
Thursday starts with an afternoon walking tour of the centre of Berlin, including works by Erich Mendelsohn, Egon Eiermann, and others; and (tbc) finishing at the Werkbund Archive Museum of Things that has a packed and entertaining survey of product designs.
Friday a coach tour to Dessau for the Bauhaus building, the Masters’ Houses and the Törten Estate (1926-8), all designed by Walter Gropius, finishing at the new Bauhaus Museum (2019) Addenda Architects.
Saturday back in Berlin includes a visit to Bernau and the former Trade Union School (1928-30) designed by Hannes Meyer, and a further walking tour of the western suburbs including Onkel Toms Hütte housing (1926-32) designed by Bruno Taut and others.
Sunday a morning’s walking tour see the Hansaviertel housing (1957-61) by Aalto, Eiermann, Gropius, Niemeyer, and Ruf, as well as Behrens’ Turbine Building (1909). There will also be some further add-on options for those staying on.
