The Ecclesiological Society – Annual Conference: Competing Churches and Chapels, 1829-1939
Saturday 28 September, London
St Alban’s Centre, Leigh Place, Baldwin’s Gardens, London EC1N 7AB
The 1829 Catholic Emancipation Act was a key moment in liberalising religious policy in the UK. It allowed Christian dissenters, both Catholic and Protestant, to worship openly without social or political penalties. Over the next century, different denominations built places of worship to accommodate growing congregations. Such building works exposed denominations’ competition for members, which used their buildings both to make their presence felt and to differentiate themselves from their rivals. This conference will examine these developments in England, Wales, and Ireland, highlighting a religious culture very different from today’s inter-denominational cooperation.
£55 for members of the Chapels Society and of the Ecclesiological Society and their guests; £65 for non-members. Prices include refreshments and lunch. The full conference programme can be found here.
