\n<\/strong>George Shaw: Entrepreneurial Architect\u2013Antiquary\u2013Forger<\/span><\/span><\/em>\u00a0by\u00a0Dr Peter N. Lindfield FSA<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Maturing in the shadow of the Northern industrial revolution and working in his family\u2019s woollen mills, Shaw is an unsung antiquary and a hero of the Victorian Gothic Revival. Guided by an insatiable love of history, he drew, collected, and, on occasion, recreated the material trappings of his armigerous ancestors from Lancashire and West Yorkshire. What flowered as a teenage passion, Shaw\u2019s life-long antiquarian pursuits were guided by his friends within the local vicar network headed by the Revs Francis Raines and Dr Hey. He was also an intimate friend of Sir Samuel Rush Meyrick and co-designer of Meyrick\u2019s Gothic home, Goodrich Court in Herefordshire.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Leaving the woollen industry behind, Shaw established an architectural practice in the 1840s from his home in Uppermill leveraging knowledge amassed during antiquarian studies. Earlier, Shaw recast his family home, St Chad\u2019s, in an heroic style speaking of a bygone age. Romantically \u2018re-olding\u2019 St Chad\u2019s\u2014guided by a love of Sir Walter Scott\u2019s Waverley Novels and Roxburghshire home, Abbotsford\u2014Shaw wished to counteract the house\u2019s 1807 rebuilding in an unassumingly \u2018dull\u2019 style by his uncle.<\/span><\/p>\n

Swelling in ambition and reputation, Shaw\u2019s outfit employed up to 100 craftsmen<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>repeatedly applied this\u00a0<\/span>antiquarian<\/span>\u00a0\u2018re-<\/span>olding<\/span>\u2019 to ancient churches and homes. Shaw also created\u00a0<\/span>new<\/span>\u00a0asymmetric country houses<\/span>\u00a0in the style<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>L<\/span>ike Pugin,\u00a0<\/span>Shaw<\/span>\u00a0was the consummate designer<\/span>: b<\/span>lending his\u00a0<\/span>antiquarian infatuation with engrained\u00a0<\/span>entrepreneurial spirit and mischievousness, Shaw\u00a0<\/span>used<\/span>\u00a0his\u00a0<\/span>knowledge of ancient oak furniture to create and sell his workshop\u2019s modern fabrications as genuine historical \u2018relics<\/span>\u2019,<\/span>\u00a0especially from Tudor England. Defrauding Northern aristocrats with his fakes<\/span>\u2014<\/span>the Duke of\u00a0<\/span>Northumberland and Earl of Derby<\/span>\u00a0included\u2014<\/span>Shaw\u00a0<\/span>even\u00a0<\/span>applied this spirit to create funerary brasses.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr Peter N. Lindfield<\/span><\/b>\u00a0is a lecturer in architectural history at the Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University. A Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, Peter has worked extensively on antiquarian forgery and the Gothic Revival. His Leverhulme Early Career Research Fellowship at Manchester Metropolitan University (2016\u201319) examined the former, and his monograph\u00a0<\/span>The Intimacies of George Shaw (1810\u201376): Diaries and Correspondence of an Architect, Antiquary, and Forger\u00a0<\/span><\/i>will be published by\u00a0<\/span>The Chetham Society<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in December 2024. It is the first work to present extensive, edited, and annotated transcripts of Shaw\u2019s diaries and letters:\u00a0<\/span>Intimacies\u00a0<\/span><\/i>offers unparallelled insight into Shaw\u2019s architectural and antiquarian interests, and the material contained within underpins the lecture.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Peter has also published extensively on Gothic design, including\u00a0<\/span>Georgian Gothic: Medievalist Architecture, Furniture and Interiors, 1730-1840\u00a0<\/span><\/i>(Boydell & Brewer, 2016),\u00a0<\/span>here<\/span><\/a>, and\u00a0<\/span>Unbuilt Strawberry Hill\u00a0<\/span><\/i>(Shaun Tyas, 2023),\u00a0<\/span>here<\/span><\/a>. In 2023\u201324 Peter ran the first phase of an Arts and Humanities Research Council-funded impact project,\u00a0<\/span>Tudor Template for A Northern Rogue<\/span><\/i>,\u00a0<\/span>here<\/span><\/a>, connecting some of Shaw\u2019s architectural and furnishing projects and related Tudor sites.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
