£15 – £75Specialist Conservation Series – Sourcing historic support information: ICOMOS Education and Training Guide (d)
12th March 2024, 1pm – 2pm
Join us for a CPD session on Sourcing historic support information: ICOMOS Education and Training Guide (d) with Ingval Maxwell, as part of a series of four ‘Conservation Suite’ webinars which explore a wide range of conservation issues spanning from the theoretical to the technical.
In this module Ingval will be opening up the question of how we:
“find and absorb all available sources of information relevant to the monument, ensemble or site being studied.” – a particularly poignant and often overlooked guide in the ICOMOS education and training guidelines which form the backbone of the conservation register.
Pursuing the intention of ICOMOS Training and Education Guideline “d) find and absorb all available sources of information relevant to the monument, ensemble or site being studied”, the presentation will explore beneficial relationships which exist between maps, photographs, and illustrative documentary evidence, together with how structural re-interpretations can aid decision-making in pursuing effective conservation work. It will reveal some surprising co-relations, and probe beyond the surface to assist in establishing an understanding of what is being viewed.
With examples pooled from a variety of sources and locations, an emphasis will be placed on the traditionally built heritage in its functional vernacular setting. Here, a comparison of before and after illustrations will explore what can readily be lost sight of within the regional context, where degrees of constructional self-sufficiency frequently determined what was originally created.
These CPD modules have been curated to provide learning opportunities for all architects, whether they are newcomers or experienced, in the field of heritage.
