The event will be led by John Pendlebury Professor of Urban Conservation at the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape, Newcastle University, assisted by Chris Barnard, Chair of the Ouseburn Trust.  

This half-day event will focus on the ongoing regeneration of the lower Ouseburn Valley. The Ouseburn – a tributary to the River Tyne – has been a cradle of industrial development with manufacturing and residential cheek by jowl. In recent years the focus of substantial regeneration efforts, the area is being transformed by exemplary new interventions including the award-winning Seven Stories Children’s Book Centre; Ouseburn City Farm; and with new housing replacing vacant sites. We will spend the afternoon exploring the Ouseburn Valley, learning about the unique role of the Ouseburn Trust and its vision for a vibrant, diverse and sustainable future for the historic valley. This will be followed by a walking tour and we will finish the afternoon with light refreshments and a networking event.

 Schedule

• 14:00 – Registration: Ouseburn Cycle Hub – hot drink / cake on arrival.
• 14:20 – Introduction and presentation by Chris Barnard and colleagues at the Ouseburn Trust on the regeneration of the valley and the Trusts role in steering this.
• 15:00 – Walking tour of the area.
• 16:15 – Return to Cycle Hub for cake, savoury options, refreshments and Q&A.
• 17:00 – Close

Getting there: The site is easily accessible from Central Newcastle. It is 1.5km from the nearest Metro Station at Manors and is just over 1mile from Newcastle Central Station. There is ticketed parking at Stepney Bank 5mins from the Cycle Hub.
