Why you should attend this training session

Even the most experienced Surveyor, Architect, Structural Engineer or Conservation Officer may never have had the opportunity to see a building in this state before.

It is truly unique and for many will be that ‘once in a career’ opportunity.

This property is Grade II Listed and has not been habitable since the 1980’s.   There is no functioning electricity, water or drainage.   It requires a full 100% refurbishment.

This is an opportunity to see the house in its raw state before any repairs are undertaken.   We will be arranging further visits at key stages of the refurbishment process, so you can get to see it evolve if you come back.

Some parts of the building are exposed and are considered too dangerous for random access, so you will not be permitted to see those parts and you will be supervised at all times.

You will be given a briefing for the background of what has happened to the house and what the future intentions are.

This will give you an unprecedented insight into the very extremes of conservation philosophy, building surveying, structural engineering and cost control.

PPE Requirements

You will be required to wear basic PPE.   You need to come with your own site boots, hi-viz and hard hat.

PPE will not be available.

Trainers will not be acceptable footwear.

You WILL NOT be allowed access inside the building if you are not wearing PPE.   No exceptions!!

Suitability

Professionals from a wide variety of disciplines including residential surveyors and valuers, building surveyors, architects, and structural engineers as well as the many conservation trades will benefit from this training opportunity.

This is also perfectly suitable for anyone with a general interest in older buildings.   That can include homeowners and buyers, for example.   Students, from all backgrounds, will find this especially valuable to their learning.

This training is open and available to everyone.  Please do consider your own personal circumstances and your ability to use stairs and walk on uneven surfaces.

There are no toilet facilities at the property.

Timing

Please select from one of the timed visits that are being made available.

CPD

This training will provide 2 hours of formal CPD.

Training Instructor

This training will be taught by Prof. Duncan Philips FRICS.  Duncan is one of the UK’s most experienced Chartered Building Surveyors regarding historic and Listed Buildings, having been doing this work for over 35 years.   He runs Listed Building Surveys and was Chair of the RICS Building Conservation Steering Group for six years from 2017 – 2023. He is the lead author of the new RICS Professional Standard – Conservation of Heritage Buildings and Assets, which will be published in 2024.  Duncan teaches building surveying, architectural history, building pathology and building conservation to undergraduate, postgraduate and mature students and also to the general public and the trades.
